Special needs children often find it really difficult to learn new things and even solve some problems that for others are very simple. The Power Of Example

While there are many methods used that help the special needs children solve problems, this is the most common one used with a high success rate. The idea is to demonstrate how something can be done so the child can see it. This is so much simpler than what many think and a method that is sometimes overlooked just because the child is one with special needs. All you really have to do in this case is to follow these steps:

  • Demonstrate – Start by running through the skills that you use and allow the child to observe what you do. It is really important that you do it slow and that you explain everything, together with the decisions you make.
  • Guide – This is the phase when you do the task or you solve the problem together with the child. You can allow the child to take some initiative and help when a problem appears. Questions are most likely going to appear so be sure you answer them patiently and as simply as possible.
  • Supervise – After you are comfortable that the child will be able to solve the problem alone, allow independent practice. Wait for as long as possible. Intervene just to offer a small nudge.
